I would like some discussion on this topic.
John Kerry in 2004 proposed rescinding the Bush tax cuts for those making $250k or more.
Barack Obama has proposed the same thing, along with other Democratic talking points like "getting rid of tax cuts for companies that ship jobs overseas."
Is it just me or does this strategy gain no traction among voters?
It's my hypothesis that the average voter on either side of the fence does not care how OTHER people are taxed. Voters care only how he or she is taxed. That's why I think the Democrats get a lukewarm response to this issue. At least that's what I've noticed. It's as if voters are saying, "What are you going to do for me? I don't care if you raise my neighbor's taxes."
Republicans seem to get this. They'll say, "I'll cut your taxes." Period.
